The Immigration Services Agency has changed the fees for extending a period of stay, changing a status of residence and permanent residence. For an extension or a change, the fee now depends on the period of stay you are granted. Here are the amounts the agency lists, and how you pay them.
Which applications pay the new fees
The new fees apply to applications received on or after 1 October 2026.[1]
Applications received by 30 September 2026 pay the earlier fee, even if the permission comes on or after 1 October.[1]
Extension and change of status at the counter
An extension of the period of stay (在留期間更新許可) and a change of status of residence (在留資格変更許可) cost the same. The fee depends on the period of stay granted, and the agency's pages list the following counter fees.[2][3]
| Period of stay granted | Fee |
|---|---|
| 3 months or less | ¥10,000 |
| Over 3 months, up to 6 months | ¥18,000 |
| Over 6 months, under 1 year | ¥25,000 |
| 1 year | ¥33,000 |
| Over 1 year, under 3 years | ¥48,000 |
| 3 years or more, under 5 years | ¥64,000 |
| 5 years or more | ¥75,000 |
Before the change, both cost ¥6,000. That is still the fee for applications received by 30 September 2026.[2]
Permanent residence
Permanent residence (永住許可) costs ¥200,000 when it is granted.[4]
Applications received by 30 September 2026 pay the earlier fee of ¥10,000.[4]
Reduced fees
For people who meet certain conditions, the fee may be reduced or waived. The reduced fee for an extension or a change is ¥10,000 whatever the period of stay, and ¥20,000 for permanent residence.[2][4]
The online system does not handle reductions. If you are sending documents for a reduction, the agency asks you to apply at the counter.[1]
Applying online
Online applications have their own amounts, and you also pay a payment fee to the payment company the agency uses. The agency's page lists these totals for an extension or a change.[1]
| Period of stay granted | Fee | Payment fee | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months or less | ¥10,000 | ¥330 | ¥10,330 |
| Over 3 months, up to 6 months | ¥15,000 | ¥330 | ¥15,330 |
| Over 6 months, under 1 year | ¥21,000 | ¥330 | ¥21,330 |
| 1 year | ¥27,000 | ¥330 | ¥27,330 |
| Over 1 year, under 3 years | ¥42,000 | ¥330 | ¥42,330 |
| 3 years or more, under 5 years | ¥56,000 | ¥550 | ¥56,550 |
| 5 years or more | ¥65,000 | ¥550 | ¥65,550 |
Paying for an online application
You pay at a convenience store or by bank payment. Credit cards and QR code payments are not accepted, and revenue stamps cannot be used for online applications received from 1 October 2026.[1]
- When: after the email saying the examination is complete, a payment email arrives from @service-dgft.com with the amount. No paper notice is sent.[1]
- Bank payment: at an ATM with a Pay-easy (ペイジー) payment number, or through internet banking. You cannot pay at a bank counter.[1]
- By when: the agency asks you to pay by the day before you collect your residence card.[1]
The agency warns that an email asking you to pay the fee from any other address is a scam.[1]
Paying at the counter with revenue stamps
Counter applications are still paid with revenue stamps (収入印紙).[1]
The shops inside immigration offices may run out of stamps. The agency asks you to buy stamps for the amount on the postcard it sends you in advance, at a large post office, and to pay in cash.[5]
Unused stamps cannot be exchanged for cash. If you bought the wrong amounts, a post office can swap them for other stamps of the same total, for ¥5 per stamp.[5]
